The fundamental purpose of this musical/play will be to showcase in a
chronological way, the development of salsa from its origins to what it
has become today. There are 6 basics sections that will highlight a time
period that has influenced salsa. These sections are a combination of
narration, acting scenes and dance numbers that together, will get
across the two main messages of the play which are:
A. Salsa being epitome of diversity and the convergence of numerous
musical, social and cultural elements that stern not from one single,
but many different communities and; B. That salsa being a classic and
that as a genre and phenomenon, it has managed to evolve and survive
over time to adapt to new generations.
The six sections are as follows:
1. Origins and history
This section displays the different genres that contributed to the
creation of salsa. On stage we see African rhythms, Contra dance, Rumba,
Danzon, Guaguanco and Son. Here we show the audience that the mixing of
these rhythms and dance styles are responsible for the birth of salsa.

2. Further Influences
This section narrates the evolution of salsa in a more modem times
(Ws-70's). We will showcase the Cuban, Puerto Rican and American
contributions. The main dance piece shows a very 'Palladium, "Fania
records' style of salsa representative of the golden era of the 70's
which is when salsa exploded into a worldwide phenomenon. (A-B)
3. Different Styles around the world
This section exposes the audience to some of the different salsa dance
styles that have developed throughout Latin America and the Caribbean
after the 70's. Cuban casino rueda, Colombian and Puerto Rican styles
are highlighted. (A)
4. Today
This section has two components. The first is the idea of salsa as a
universal and inclusive music style. We visualize this through dance
where there are dancers of many different ethnicities. We make note of
the fact that people from many nationalities have been able to take part
in the salsa movement. The second component will be a showcase of the
eternal "battle' between On 1 (LA) and On2 (NY) styles. The message that
albeit the differences, we are ultimately dancing to the same rhythm.
(A)
5. The future
In the 2000's salsa has been mixed with rhythms such as Rap, Hip Hop,
Reggae and Reggaeton. We question what there is to come. By dancing to
these hybrids we acknowledge the fluidity and versatility of the genre.
(B)
6. Finale
This section will display a summary of the history "putting it all
together" to what Salsa is now. Music will be played representing the
hard journey.
